Mediterranean Gas: We support the energy security of Greece, the Balkans and Europe

The 22nd World LNG Summit & Awards, a leading event of the LNG market for 2022, opened yesterday with a speech by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, under the auspices of DESFA and with the support of Mediterranean Gas and other companies.  The international conference, which is being held for the first time in Greece, takes place at Grand Hyatt Athens, from 29 November to 2 December 2022.  Mediterranean Gas, a silver sponsor of the summit among others, talked about the ARGO FSRU project, during the session “Europe LNG Panel: Why LNG is the key to energy security in the region”.

During this session the distinguished speakers discussed about the diversification from Russian gas and supply chain optimization, the challenge for import and distribution infrastructure and energy development in the Mediterranean and Southeastern Europe.   Mediterranean Gas CEO, Mr. Basilio Petkidis, stated that the ARGO FSRU terminal in Volos, strategically located in the heart of the Mediterranean and in the center of the National Natural Gas Transport System, will support the country’s energy security and diversification.

Mr. Petkidis referred to consumption and demand data (Eurostat), according to which he stated that with the current infrastructure we cannot meet the gas needs at European level.  “In the coming years, even with all these infrastructures in operation, we will still be in a supply deficit, making it clear that Greece will play a crucial role as a gateway to energy security to mitigate the gap in the region“, noted Mr. Petkidis.  “When you need 40 bcm and the potential storage is 25 bcm we have not ensured energy security. If we do not make the necessary long-term

ARGO FSRU in Volos, is an emblematic project that is being developed to contribute to the country’s energy needs, but also to increase import and storage capacity in all Balkan countries and Southeastern Europe.

ARGO’s regasification capacity will be 5.2 bcm of natural gas per year. It is located in the center of Greece, in the middle of the NNGTS, offering high pressure and sustainability in the system and flexibility to all terminal users, while offering a wide range of services. The company is currently in market test for capacity allocation (Open Season). ARGO FSRU is a new energy gate for Greece and Europe.
