Greece is a major hub for LNG and natural gas.

The demand for NNGS capacity for the import and export of natural gas was particularly increased during the first, non-binding phase of the Market Test, implemented by DESFA for the expansion of the National Natural Gas System. As stated in an announcement by the Operator, a total of 27 companies submitted requests for capacity reservation, with a horizon from next year until 2050. Of the 27 proposals, 17 come from international companies, mainly from Central and Southeastern Europe (such as Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, Cyprus, North Macedonia), but also from the USA, which highlights Greece’s upgraded role in the region’s energy map, while the remaining 10 come from large Greek companies. There was significant interest in the existing and new interconnection points of the NNGS, as well as in LNG terminals, such as the ARGO FSRU in Volos , for which there was an increased demand for capacity beyond 15 years.
